Used Yamaha Upright Pianos

Used Yamaha uprights range from compact domestic models to tall professional instruments. U1 and U3 variants are especially common, but suffix, serial number, condition and preparation all affect the result.

Choose the individual piano for its touch, tone and condition rather than assuming every instrument from one period is identical.

Used Yamaha U3H upright piano

Common used Yamaha upright families

U1 variants

Approximately 121cm high. Common suffixes include D, G, H and later generations. A practical professional upright size for homes, schools and studios.

U3 variants

Approximately 131cm high. The taller cabinet and longer bass scale can provide greater depth and projection, subject to preparation and room acoustics.

Other Yamaha uprights

UX, YUS, SU, P, b/B and regional models appear on the used market. Confirm specifications from the exact model and serial number.

What the suffix tells you

Letters following U1 or U3 usually identify a production generation or variant. They help narrow the period and specification but do not replace the serial number or physical inspection.

Cabinet finish, pedal configuration and regional specification may differ within a model family.

Imported and grey-market pianos

Some used Yamahas were originally sold in another market. Ask about climate history, servicing, documentation, parts compatibility and what preparation was completed after import.

Origin alone does not establish condition or musical quality.

Silent systems and practice pedals

A traditional practice pedal places felt between hammers and strings to reduce acoustic volume. Yamaha SILENT systems stop the hammers before the strings and provide headphone sound through sensors and digital electronics.

On a used silent piano, test acoustic regulation, let-off, muting, sensors, pedals, headphones and controls. System generation and maintenance history matter; do not judge every silent model by one earlier design.

Before buying

  • Confirm model and serial
  • Check tuning stability
  • Inspect hammer wear
  • Test regulation and pedals
  • Review service history
  • Test all electronics fitted

Condition and preparation

A used upright may need tuning, regulation, voicing, cleaning, pedal work or replacement of worn parts. Ask for a written description of preparation, warranty terms offered on that specific sale, and any known exclusions.

Play repeated notes, soft passages and strong chords across the full keyboard. Listen for tonal breaks and check that the touch remains even.
