Steinway Model L
The Model L is a New York-built Steinway grand from the same broad domestic size class as the Model O. It is most often encountered as a used or restored instrument.
Introduced in 1923, the Model L is identified by its model markings and New York construction details rather than size alone.

Many American Steinways can be recognised by a more squared fallboard profile over the keys, in contrast with the rounded form commonly associated with Hamburg production. This is a helpful clue rather than a complete identification method.
Factory can influence design and voicing traditions, but it does not determine whether an individual piano is good. Hammer choice, action preparation, restoration decisions and room acoustics can create substantial differences between two Model L grands.

Assessing a used or restored Model L
Structure
Check wrest-plank and tuning stability, bridges, soundboard, strings and frame. Ask which structural parts remain original and which have been repaired or replaced.

Establish the maker and age of replacement parts, then assess geometry, repetition, key weighting, regulation and hammer condition.
Tone
Listen across registers at several dynamic levels. Judge the individual piano rather than relying on assumptions about American or German production.
Compare Model L with Model O
The Model L and Model O occupy a similar size category, but they come from different production histories and should not be treated as identical. Compare scale, action, restoration scope and musical result on the actual instruments.
For a restored example, request invoices and photographs of work completed. A comprehensive, well-executed restoration is more informative than a broad claim that a piano has been “fully restored”.
