Steinway Model B
The Model B is Steinway’s semi-concert or classic grand, combining a long scale and broad dynamic range with a footprint smaller than a full concert grand.

Scale, control and intended use
The Model B’s longer strings, larger soundboard and long key levers can support greater tonal development and fine control across a wide dynamic range. These advantages depend on careful regulation, suitable hammers and skilled voicing.
Its power suits larger rooms better than small reflective spaces. A prepared Model B should still play quietly and evenly; sheer volume is not a substitute for control, colour and balance.

Assessing a used or restored Model B
Structural foundation
Check wrest-plank, tuning stability, bridges, soundboard, strings and frame. A larger piano can make structural shortcomings particularly expensive to address.
Action evidence
Identify replacement parts and assess key weighting, geometry, repetition, regulation and hammer condition. Request invoices and photographs of previous work.
Musical preparation
Test very quiet playing, repeated notes, pedalling and transitions between registers. Listen for power that remains controlled rather than harsh.
Compare Model B with A and C
Model A variants offer a shorter salon-grand format. The Model B adds scale and versatility, while the larger Model C moves closer to concert-grand dimensions. Room, player, use and restoration quality should guide the decision.
Older Model Bs on the UK market range from largely original instruments to comprehensively rebuilt examples. Age alone does not describe condition, and “restored” should always be supported by a detailed scope of work.
