Comments
Most old Waldstein pianos are walnut upright overstrung overdampers with an inlay on the front panel. They have a rich tone but because the dampers are over the hammers, they “ring on” instead of cutting off cleanly. Having tuned many of them, we find that they also often suffer from loose tuning pins when subject to central heating, meaning that they go out of tune quickly. This can be cured by fitting a new set of tuning pins. Modern Waldsteins are common. They are made in the Pearl River factory in China. Early modern ones are not of high quality but there has been a vast improvement and we understand from others in the trade that the new Waldstein (from 2009) is one of the best pianos coming out of China.
