Bechstein upright pianos
Older Bechstein uprights can offer a rich tone, responsive touch and finely made traditional cabinetry. Their value depends heavily on structural condition and the quality of any restoration.

What to inspect before buying
Pre-1902 Models I-V often develop loose tuning pins as their wrest-planks age and respond to modern central heating. Some instruments need a new wrest-plank and restringing. In 2013 this work was described as costing £3,500 plus VAT; obtain a current written estimate before making a decision.
Post-1902 Models 6-10 are generally less likely to require that intervention, although pin-block condition, strings, bridges, soundboard, action wear and cabinet restoration still need individual assessment.

Condition matters more than the model number
Two Bechstein uprights of the same model can differ substantially after a century of use. Ask who completed any restoration, which structural and action parts were replaced, how stable the tuning is, and whether the piano has been prepared for the room in which it will be used.
