Use this reference to estimate when a C. Bechstein piano was made. Bechstein figures are commonly recorded as the last serial number used in each year, so the result should be treated as an approximate production date.

Where to look

On an upright, the serial number is usually stamped on the iron frame above or near the tuning pins. On a grand, first look on the frame near the tuning pins.

Check the number

Some grands also carry a smaller case number on a wooden strut underneath. Do not assume that this is the main serial number.

Serial-number reference

Find the nearest serial number in the table. If the instrument falls between two entries, its production date is likely to fall between those years.
