Best known of the top makes. Mostly German Steinway pianos found in the UK. Older upright Steinways often very costly to recondition. Grands excellent from 1877 onwards but may be very worn indeed. Modern Steinway pianos lack the richness of tone of the older ones. But make up for it with a superb action. One of the best concert grands. NB: Steinway is renowned as a concert piano and is not necessarily the best domestic piano. Beware of buying a Steinway if you are putting it into a small room; they are an intrinsically loud piano. From 1890 to about 1930 Bluthner was Europe’s top maker for domestic pianos and we recommend them for their subtle and quieter tone.
